Sector 1 · The story

We went for clips. We found a film.

A Kellett Motorsport driver in race overalls, interviewed trackside

We went to Oulton Park to make a few clips for the BRSCC. We were placed with Kellett Motorsport, and within a few hours it was obvious there was a much bigger story in that garage.

No brief and no budget. We made it to show what's possible when you give a race weekend the time it deserves.

Gordon
Where it started. Gordon Kellett Motors, the Sierra and the Astra.
Alastair
The second generation. Racing at Mondello back in 2004.
William
The third generation, carrying the name on.
Graeme
The former apprentice.

Then race one happened

A crash in race one, a car in pieces and 90 minutes until race two. The weekend turned into a rebuild against the clock, and a team that still found time to help a rival.

How it ends, we'll leave to the film.

Sector 2 · The shoot

No media pass. No problem.

Before the weekend: the family's history, their racing archive and the questions for Alastair, William and Graeme. Interviews moved from the camper to outdoors at sunset, lit with a softbox and shot for golden hour warmth.

On the day it was run and gun. Paddock, garage, grid and pit wall, all from public areas and the paddock, with no media pass. The crash aftermath and the rebuild were filmed as they happened, and the interviews straight after the final.

Sector 3 · The edit

4TB into 45 minutes.

It opens on a black and white montage from 2004 to now, and Alastair watching his 2004 race back for the first time in years. Title cards carry the story. The outcome of the rebuild stays hidden until a reveal built around the live commentary, and it ends on family, with Gordon's words and a blooper reel.

01

03

VFX

Tracked spotlights and Magic Mask to pick cars out of race footage, Speed Warp slow motion and Super Scale on the old archive.

04

Sound

A concussion effect after the crash, a ticking clock for the rebuild, and music timed to every drop and hard cut.

05

Archive

2004 Mondello and the 1989 Leinster Trophy, family photos, in-car footage and the BRSCC livestream, cut alongside 4K.

06

Finishing

8 music tracks, 689 hand-corrected subtitle lines, custom title cards, and a separate 90 second trailer that teases without spoiling.

Red flags · Problems solved

What could have stopped it.

  • No media passShot from public areas and the paddock. The story was in the garage anyway.
  • A crash mid-shootThe plan went out of the window in race one. The rebuild became the film.
  • 4TB in under a weekA proxy workflow built for a big multi-camera project, and a structure that knew where it was going.
  • Old archive next to 4KUpscaled, then treated in black and white so it sits naturally in the cut.
  • Keeping the secretTitle cards and pacing that hold the outcome back until the reveal.
Preview only until William Kellett OKs it

That is absolutely phenomenal. I had goosebumps watching that back. I've actually watched it back twice, it's been that good.
