Phone vs camera

Phone or camera?

An honest look at what a phone does well, what a camera does better, and where the difference costs a business customers.

01The same shot

Five seconds is all it takes.

Before the arguments, the evidence. One pour, filmed twice, seconds apart.

Same shot. Same five seconds.

First on a phone. Then on our camera.

A real pour from a Planty shoot in their London kitchen. The opening seconds are an iPhone held beside our rig, the rest is the same moment on our camera, closer. Same kitchen, same light, same chef.

That gap is what a customer sees when they compare your feed with the brand next to you.

02The difference

Where the gap comes from.

Phones are remarkable, and we film on them too. But a phone is designed to get a good result for anyone, anywhere, in one tap. A camera is designed to get the best result for someone who knows what they are doing. Here is what that means on screen.

Light

Phone

Handles everyday light well. In bright or mixed light it flattens highlights and shadows to fit everything in, which is why so much phone footage looks the same.

Camera

A larger sensor holds the highlights and the shadows. Look at the sauce in the clip: on our camera you can see the gloss on it.

Depth

Phone

The background stays sharp, or gets a software blur that smudges edges.

Camera

A real lens lets the background fall away naturally, so the eye goes straight to the product, the job or the person.

Getting close

Phone

Zooming in usually means cropping, and the picture softens.

Camera

We use the right lens for the shot and get physically closer. More detail, not more pixels.

Sound

Phone

The built-in mic records the whole room: extraction fans, traffic, echo.

Camera

Dedicated microphones on the person talking. Every word crisp, which matters most on testimonials and interviews.

Consistency

Phone

Every clip is processed automatically, so colour and look change from shot to shot.

Camera

Everything is graded to one look, so your feed reads as one brand rather than a camera roll.

Speed and cost

Phone

Instant and free. Nothing beats it for being there when something happens.

Camera

Planned shoots, editing time and kit. It takes longer, which is why it goes on the content that has to sell.

03When to use which

You need both. Just not for the same things.

Most people look at your page before they buy from you. That is the moment your content is really for, and it is where quality decides who gets the call.

Your phone is perfect for
  • Stories and quick updates from the day
  • Behind the scenes and team moments
  • Reacting to something that just happened
  • Keeping the feed alive between shoots
Bring in a camera for
  • Anything you put ad spend behind
  • Finished jobs and products, the work you are selling
  • Customer testimonials and interviews
  • Your website, your pinned posts and anything a customer uses to compare you

This is how we work with clients. We film the content that has to do the selling, and they keep posting from their phone in between. Two kinds of content, one feed that looks like one brand.

04Content check
